" Talk about Breathing " The breath is the bridge between the body and mind. It is the filling between the physical body and the mind body sandwich. Its function is to act as the force of motion for the two other parts of the sandwich. Without energy the physical body cannot move. Movements in our body affect our breathing. When we suddenly run or quicken our pace, the oxygen and energy requirement go up and we breathe faster. When we slow down, our breath follows. Awareness of the breath can bring vitality and enjoyment to each moment of life. By exhaling slowly, we know immediately if any strain or stress has crept into our body or mind. Our breath become a great barometer for relaxation and stress. As babies, we belly breathe, developing our lower lungs first. Much of our early months is spent lying down. Our physical activity is minor compared to our rapid inner growth and development. There is a gentle, rhythmical in-an-out motion as the belly expands and contracts. As adults we tend to keep the belly still when we breaths. Sometimes, for the sake od fashion or even in the military, we are taught to keep the belly sucked in. Deep breathing allowa us to take in about seven times the amount of oxygen as in our normal breathing. When we take in that slow, deep breath, the lungs fully expand and the entire system is oxygenated. There is even a special response that triggers a physiological response to persuade the body to relax with each exhalation. Belly breathing can be practiced while lying down in the relaxation position or sitting comfortably with the back erect. The most important aspects are that you are relaxed, the belly is soft, and the energy is flowing in the spine. Keep the breath steady and gentle without any strain. If anytime you feel dizzy or light-headed, discontinue the practice and allow the breath to return to normal. Remember to breathe through your nose, with filters and warms the air. Try it yourself: Place your right hand so that the thumb rests at the navel and the fingers embrace the belly. This will help you to be aware of the movement of the abdomen as you breathe. Being by exhaling completely through the nose. The belly and the right hand will move in. At the end of the exhalation, slighty con- tract the belly. Being the inhalation by expanding the belly and the right hand, allowing the lower lungs to fill. As you exhale, contract the belly. Inhale and expand the belly; exhale and contract the belly. Continue a few times until you feel comfortable with the practice. The more these practices are used, the more they will show you the peace that is own true nature. Enjoy.
