You may wonder what's so special about breathing- you've been doing it for years. But few of us do it well. When we are babies our breathing follows a natural pattern, ideally suited to our needs.
Unfortunately, as we grow up the stresses and strains of daily life, and even the clothes we wear, often mean that we no longer make full use of our marvellous breathing equipment.
Many of us develop the habit of breathing too shallowly , too fast or too heavily.
Poor breathing can affect our health and also our state of mind. Listen to your breath now. Is it smooth, rhythmical and quiet ? If so you will be feeling relaxed and calm. If it is shallow, quick and/ or heavy, watch for other signs of tension - raised shoulders, clenched teeth, frown lines. Quieten the breathing and the mind will follow-tension will be released.
When we are feeling tense or panicky a few slow deep breaths will help us to regain in a calm mind and body.
The breathing is carried out by the automatic nervous system, meaning that we breathe without to do anything consciously. However, the way we breathe directly corresponds to our emotions : stressful or fearful states are usually accompanied by short, shallow breathing ,high inthe chest ; whereas peaceful and relaxed states are accompanied by longer, deeper breaths centred in the belly area.
Breathing marks your entry into this world.
No longer supported by your mother, it propels you into your own existence.
Use your breath to keep breathing into and through any resistance. Use your breath to give you courage and fearlessness, to ground you in your present reality. Your breath is your greatest friend, always present, always there to help you.
I will share more about "Breathing" with you on the next article.
Our world is built upon relationship and communication. May this understanding bring you good health and happiness.
Much love & peace
